Changes to Mount Dora Historic Inn

There are now new innkeepers at the beautiful Mount Dora Historic Inn. When I posted to their facebook page they were so gracious and mentioned new wonderful recipes. I'll give a link to their breakfast page so you can see what I mean. Now I want to introduce them to you and let them tell their story:

"Many of our guests asked how Ana and I came to own a Bed and Breakfast.  The journey was fraught with obstacles, self-trials, a few career changes; and, of course determination.
It has been Ana’s dream to be an innkeeper for many years; in fact, it evolved from a casual discussion at dinner one night, to an all encompassing entity within a few short months of staying at our first B & B. 

Once the decision was made, we began researching inn’s for sale in Florida, California, and Cape Cod; and, to make our research complete, we made a trip to each one, stayed at the inns and met the innkeepers.  Of course, we would stay for several days so we could take in the sights, locals, and…You guessed it–the cuisine. 
So we weighed out all of the goods, the greats and the not-so greats and decided Mount Dora, Florida was the place for us.  It has been a fabulous journey and we have been truly blessed to be living our dream!"

The Artist’s Inn & Gallery in Terre Hill

Come and enjoy this antique-filled 1853, Federal Inn in Terre Hill, a small town nestled among Amish and Mennonite farms. Browse through the colored pencil pictures in the gallery/sitting room, featuring the work of Innkeeper, Bruce Garrabrandt. You'll feel like you've escaped to a simpler, gentler time as horse-drawn buggies pass by the inn and chimes play from the 19th century church across the street. Tennis, golf, and cross-country skiing are all nearby or you can enjoy spectator sports like antiquing and outlet shopping. At the end of your day, you'll find your bed turned down with home-made chocolates on your pillow. All of our food is made from scratch and feature eggs and produce from nearby farms, flour and grains from a local mill and even the chocolate is from a nearby chocolate factory. All rooms are furnished in antiques, and include hairdryers, fireplaces, robes, CD players, clock radios, irons and ironing boards and featherbeds covered with Amish-made quilts. Two rooms boast whirlpool tubs and one also has a massage shower and private porch. Terre Hill has some of the best views in Lancaster County. The terrain is hilly and many bike touring companies go right past the front of our inn, which also is true for horse-drawn buggies of the local Amish and Mennonite farmers. Adamstown (called the "Antiques Capitol of the USA"), is just four miles away and has thousands of dealers and their wares every weekend. There are local farm markets, covered bridges, one-room schoolhouses, produce stands and small craft and antique stores. Our town has a Memorial Day Service, annual antique car show weekend, town-wide yard sale weekend, and Terre Hill Days. Surrounding towns also have harvest festivals in the fall. The city of Lancaster is a short drive away and offers many museums and historic walking tours. This area is also known for micro-breweries and we can steer guests to some of the best. Learn about the unique lifestyle of the Amish and Old Order Mennonites. Of course, there is always outlet shopping in Reading or Lancaster.

Cookies in the Afternoon in Red Wing

The Candlelight Inn in Red Wing, MN, was built in 1877, by Horace Rich, the Manager of the Red Wing Stoneware Company, as his private residence. As you enter, you'll notice the exquisite original stained glass windows and exquisite woodwork in the front hall and staircase — skillfully crafted by European immigrants from local Butternut trees. Original Quesal light fixtures, gleaming hardwood floors, and antique period furnishings create a feeling of warmth and harmony throughout the home. Log House & Homestead on Spirit Lake

The Inn began on a whim by the parents of the present owners. They opened the doors of the Log House in June of 1990, having recently retired from the foreign service in Africa. Within a few years, guest demand justified expansion to the Homestead; and what had been a seasonal enterprise, quickly grew to a year-round operation. In 1998 they put themselves "out to pasture" and turned the reins over to their two daughters. Suzanne Tweten lives and thrives on the property with her two opinionated cats and is the primary owner. Her sister, Patrice Allen, works on-site 5 months of the year and manages the books from St. Louis with her understanding husband Mark the remainder of the year.  

Two very different structures compose this little hostelry located in picturesque Otter Tail County in the heart of Minnesota’s lakes region. The county's rolling hills and curving roads encase over 1,000 lakes (more than any other county in the US). It is a verdant land in summer, a riot of color in autumn and pristine white in winter--a lovely playground for any season. Watching the lake ice "go out" in spring can be spectacular.

THE HOMESTEAD, original to the property, was built in 1902 by Swedish immigrants Gust Fredholm and wife Kristina. TODAY, its lakeside private entrance, all-season wicker-filled porch, central air conditioning, and three lovely bedrooms offer quests luxury and comfort.

THE LOG HOUSE circa 1889, across the meadow, was built by the innkeeper's great-great-grandfather Peter Jensen and his wife Anna. It was moved intact 80 miles from northern Minnesota and now rests on a knoll overlooking Spirit Lake.

At the IAAP Conference!

And here I am in April at the Mobile Marriott Hotel for the IAAP Conference. Sold Organo Gold iced Latte Frappuccinos, gift packs and several of the B&B Cookbooks. IAAP stands for International Association of Administrative Professionals. (It was mostly women!)

Alabama Power Safety Renewal Expo

I was invited to attend the Alabama Power Safety Renewal Expo in May to give out samplings of my healthy Organo Gold coffee. I also sold several of the B&B cookbook to some employees! (See them on the far right?)

Dauphin Island Sunset

I post so much about other places but I live in the most beautiful state. Government Street downtown is lined with the most lush green trees hanging over the street and Antebellum homes that have been kept beautifully restored. The beaches are within reach and have brilliant sunrises and sunsets. Here is one:

The Dickey House in Marshfield, Missouri

The Dickey House, a lovely and gracious Greek Revival mansion, was built at the turn of the century by Samuel N. Dickey, a prominent prosecuting attorney, and it remained in the family until 1970. Now the home is a Bed and Breakfast Inn which invites you to step back in time. From the first glimpse of this massive mansion, with its three foot diameter columns and intricate woodwork on the widows walk directly above the beveled glass front entrance, you feel that you have entered an era that has long since passed. While in the area be certain to visit The Town Square and The Hubble Telescope Replica, the nearby Buena Vista Exotic Animal Park, the Fantastic Caverns, Bass Pro Shop and our local antique stores. Plan and enjoy a Dickey House Murder Mystery Weekend! Gather 4 to 7 couples, pick a weekend, and let us host your very own Murder. Your character and clues will be mailed to you approximately 10 days prior to the weekend. The clues are designed to be revealed during conversation with the other characters. Your clue sheet will advise you when each clue is to be revealed. Murder Mystery weekends at The Dickey House begin on Friday night. The get together is your chance to meet the other players and gather information about each of the characters. You may attend “in costume” if you wish. Please try and stay in character all weekend until the killer is identified.

Museum Hill B&B in St. Joseph, Missouri

The inn is now closed but feel free to read on to see what a wonderful place it was:
On a hill overlooking downtown St. Joseph, Missouri, this original three-story 1870’s, home is a grand B&B with 4 winsome rooms. Happy to offer guests plenty of space to relax and enjoy late 19th century architecture and hospitality. 

The Museum Hill B&B is located in the heart of St. Joseph in the Museum Hill Historic District situated on the Missouri River bluffs. Our guests enjoy a beautiful view of Civic Center Park and can walk to museums, shopping, restaurants, the movie house, and even the famous Missouri Theater (Renovated 2002), home of the St. Joseph Symphony, as well as other performance art groups. Our three-story Italianate brick home was built in the 1870's, for a prominent grocer, George Kennard. In 1910, the house was purchased by Ernest E. Chase of the Chase Candy Company who himself is credited as the "inventor" of the famous "Cherry Mash" candy bar, one of which every guests receives. Chase purchased the house for his bride, Emma, and made numerous changes to the house, including a massive addition in rear and wrap-around front porch with a spectacular view. 

In 1995, the house was spotlighted in This Old House magazine in its "save this old house" section. A fire in the fall of 1995, consumed the roof and most of the third floor and did extensive damage to the entire house. What then seemed doomed to the wrecking ball was viewed as "having lots of potential" to handyman John Wood. His bride, Karen, reluctantly agreed to the purchase and together they began the nearly six year journey of restoration. John's handyman skills, many hands helped, and many prayers were offered during the home's rejuvenation and have brought about this marvelous achievement-a tribute to John and Karen's visionary determination and commitment. Come feel the spirit of redemption and hope that exudes from these 130 year old walls!

 


Museum Hill Bed and Breakfast was one of three historic properties representing Buchanan County in  "Painting Missouri", a wonderful  artistic book by author Karen Glines and artist Billyo O' Donnell.  Published in 2008, the book is the result of a 7 year adventure that took place in all 114 counties in Missouri.  Each region depicts an oil painting showing the scenes and seasons along the highways and byways with a descriptive essay.

Deer Run Ranch, Doesn't that Sound Inviting?

Deer Run Ranch Bed & Breakfast is the perfect hideaway for a private, secluded getaway any time of the year. Alfafa fields surround the complex, which has spectacular views of Washoe Lake and the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west. Tall cottonwoods shade the pond deck, a favorite spot for watching the abundant wildlife that call Deer Run home. Top The original ranch, called the Quarter Circle JP, was purchased in 1937, by Emily and Jim Greil (Muffy's parents) for back taxes of $2400. It and the "Goat Ranch" at the foot of Jumbo Grade two miles north of here were the only residences on the one lane, dirt road around this side of Washoe Lake. All the children in the valley went to the one room schoolhouse in Franktown, directly across the lake - grades 1-8, one teacher. 

Legend has it that the ranch springs - including our spring and pond - watered small truck gardens, the produce being carried by wagon up "Deadman's" (our main driveway) and Jumbo Grades to Virginia City during the height of the mining boom on the Comstock in the late 1800’s. Sometime after the end of World War I, prohibition became the law of the land, and the "Moonshiners" gravitated to isolated lands with plenty of water to set up their stills. The spring tunnels here on the ranch were used for that purpose, and at some point before the repeal of prohibition in 1933, government agents blew up the stills, destroying the tunnel at our spring. Excavations for our house unearthed pipes and other distillery relics, as well as some of the old shoring from the original spring.

Bliss Mansion in Nevada!

Today, the Bliss Mansion Bed & Breakfast remains one of the most imposing homes in Nevada. The mansion stands directly across from the Governor's Mansion in the heart of Carson City. Travelers looking to revisit the past are invited to settle into one of the five large tastefully appointed suites with private baths. All have a queen or two double beds, and some have private entrances that open onto one of two spacious sundecks. Three suites in the separate carriage house are roomy, with private decks or patios. Two have kitchenettes. The owners attend to every detail, including touches like Hemingway paperbacks on night tables. Homemade breads and muffins are served each morning on a lovely sun porch with fresh flowers from the ever-blooming gardens."
