Rosewood Inn B&B in Bethany

In the words of innkeeper Val Owens: "This is a very different "old Inn" because it is actually a collection of many old homes. By tearing down small old homes and recycling lumber, doors, cabinets, and stained glass windows we were able to create this new "old Inn". On a cold day in January, '93 we began by tearing down the old house, pulling nails, and slowly building the Inn you see from the collected materials both old and new. Many friends and family helped along the way and by June, '94 we moved into our new Inn. One year later on July 1, 1995 we officially opened as the Rosewood Inn Bed & Breakfast. Actually, it is the best of both worlds. Modern appliances, new electrical wiring, energy efficient heat and air conditioning are just a few of the advantages of a newly built Inn. However, the recycled materials add a quality to our Inn that was traditionally found in days gone by. Solid oak cabinets and doors, stained glass window, and seasoned lumber contribute quality and atmosphere to our Inn. Every Inn has a story, but ours has several. We have always loved having people in our home so opening a Bed & Breakfast seemed to be a very reasonable thing to do. Friends sometimes ask us about letting "strangers" into our Inn. We simply tell them that the people who choose to stay in Bed & Breakfasts are the kind of people that could be your best friends, if you had the opportunity to meet them...and we are fortunate enough to have that pleasure. We consider ourselves caretakers of this Inn, which was meant to be shared and we are truly blessed with the opportunity to do so. The design has elements from Victorian homes in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana. The best aspects of each were combined to create a comfortable home and a graceful retreat. The rooms are larger than you might expect and the floor plan provides a private, comfortable arrangement for guests."

Visit Victorian Country B&B in Center, North Dakota

Victorian Country B&B in Center, North Dakota:
Experience the flavor of country living while staying in the romantic bedroom loft of our 50's round roof barn, which is decorated with rural antiques. Modern bathroom facilities have been installed for your convenience. A full country breakfast will be served in the Victorian farmhouse.

Beautiful spacious grounds with exotic animals and a historical refurbished 1920's, one room schoolhouse add to the experience of this country hide-away. You may browse through our unique gift shop which hosts North Dakota made products. If rustic isn't your taste, our quaint and airy Victorian style bed and bath may be just your "cup of tea". A large sitting room and walk out balcony makes this second story all yours. Soak your tension away in the antique claw foot tub or lounge in our wicker chair in the sunny dormer window area.

Plenty of interesting coffee table reading is available. If you want to pamper yourself this is the place for you. Have breakfast in our dining room next to the bay window overlooking the front lawn. Later, coffee or lemonade will be served out back on the wrap-around veranda allowing you a chance to soak in the fresh air and watch the yellow finches feed. Our veranda, which is decorated with wicker furniture and flower pots, wraps around to a secluded side of the yard with a swing nestled next to lacy vines where you can watch the cows with their babies grazing in the pasture. We love to visit and meet new people. However, if you long for seclusion we will deliver breakfast to your door in a basket. Our area is rich in American Indian culture and cowboy rodeo lifestyles.

Our wide-open spaces, beautiful sunsets, and vast beauty of the Missouri River make this area a reflection of the Old West. We are located near the heart of North Dakota's Lewis & Clark Trail. The Lewis & Clark Expedition stands as a United States odyssey. The great adventure speaks to Americans of all kinds, perhaps because among the Corps of Discovery there was a woman, a black man, and those of French, Irish and English descent. The remarkable journey required discipline and sacrifice, strength and ingenuity. The expedition traveled the pulsing arteries of the continent, the Missouri and Columbia rivers, and it crossed the nation's backbone, the Rocky Mountains. The epic was recorded in ordinary language, made extraordinary by the experience of its authors. Now, nearly 200 years later, America has begun a national pilgrimage following the steps of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and the Corps of Discovery.

Update on 1823 Historic Rose Hill Inn

Here's another update, this time on the 1823 Historic Rose Hill Inn! I mentioned before that there are new innkeepers but thought you might like to "meet" them and read an interesting fact.
Meet Alder & Gill Blackburn:

Alder and Gill Blackburn are the new innkeepers at Rose Hill Inn but not new to inns. They have traveled extensively and stayed at many fine bed and breakfast establishments all over the USA and Europe and hope to bring the best of these experiences home to Rose Hill Inn.

You will soon determine that they were both born, grew up, educated and married in England. Alder and Gill (pronounced "Jill") emigrated to the United States in the mid-1960s and have lived in a number of locations but mostly in Columbus, Ohio.

Prior to moving to Versailles they made their home in South Carolina. "We have fallen completely in love with Kentucky," Gill said, "with its rich history and beautiful countryside."

And Alder wrote a book!!

And, of course, meet their pets

Happy Saturday to All!

All the inns in my cookbook are very unique with fun things to do and fun surroundings. The innkeepers were so gracious to share their favorite recipes and their personal stories of their lives of how they became innkeepers and also some great history about the inns.

My favorite part of the day is morning, sitting outside when it is cool in the morning or in my favorite spot to have my quiet time and enjoy my favorite coffee. If you are a coffee drinker, you understand how enjoyable that time can be. Because I enjoy coffee so much, I became a coffee distributor and found a coffee that is actually good for you and non-acidic. Contact me if you'd like to learn more or leave me a comment. Then when you get your coffee order from me, sit back and enjoy it and read through the cookbook and plan a fun meal or a trip to some of the great inns in the book.

Happy Saturday to all!

Enjoy the ambiance, comfort and hospitality of a Bygone Era just 60 miles from Washington, DC. In charming Colonial Charles Town, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains where the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers meet, the Washington House Inn is a wonderful example of late Victorian architecture.

Built at the turn of the century, by descendants of President Washington's brothers John Augustine and Samuel. The Inn is graced with antique furnishings, carved oak mantles, fireplaces and spacious guest rooms, each with air conditioning, queen size bed and private bath. B & B’s are the opening of private homes and new friendships, so relax with friends in the parlor with refreshments, enjoy the serenity of the gazebo or unwind on the large, inviting wraparound veranda, complete with swing and rocking chairs.

Take a leisurely stroll to the charming Colonial Main Street. Hike the mountain trails of the Blue Ridge or bike along the restored C&O towpath. Drive to nearby historical sites, and find that perfect antique on the way back to the Inn. Changes to Mount Dora Historic Inn

There are now new innkeepers at the beautiful Mount Dora Historic Inn. When I posted to their facebook page they were so gracious and mentioned new wonderful recipes. I'll give a link to their breakfast page so you can see what I mean. Now I want to introduce them to you and let them tell their story:

"Many of our guests asked how Ana and I came to own a Bed and Breakfast.  The journey was fraught with obstacles, self-trials, a few career changes; and, of course determination.
It has been Ana’s dream to be an innkeeper for many years; in fact, it evolved from a casual discussion at dinner one night, to an all encompassing entity within a few short months of staying at our first B & B.

Once the decision was made, we began researching inn’s for sale in Florida, California, and Cape Cod; and, to make our research complete, we made a trip to each one, stayed at the inns and met the innkeepers.  Of course, we would stay for several days so we could take in the sights, locals, and…You guessed it–the cuisine.
So we weighed out all of the goods, the greats and the not-so greats and decided Mount Dora, Florida was the place for us.  It has been a fabulous journey and we have been truly blessed to be living our dream!"

Here is the link to their breakfast page:

Keep up with them on Facebook!

Enjoy!

The Artist’s Inn & Gallery in Terre Hill

The Artist’s Inn & Gallery in Terre Hill
Come and enjoy this antique-filled 1853, Federal Inn in Terre Hill, a small town nestled among Amish and Mennonite farms. Browse through the colored pencil pictures in the gallery/sitting room, featuring the work of Innkeeper, Bruce Garrabrandt. You'll feel like you've escaped to a simpler, gentler time as horse-drawn buggies pass by the inn and chimes play from the 19th century church across the street. Tennis, golf, and cross-country skiing are all nearby or you can enjoy spectator sports like antiquing and outlet shopping. At the end of your day, you'll find your bed turned down with home-made chocolates on your pillow. All of our food is made from scratch and feature eggs and produce from nearby farms, flour and grains from a local mill and even the chocolate is from a nearby chocolate factory. All rooms are furnished in antiques, and include hairdryers, fireplaces, robes, CD players, clock radios, irons and ironing boards and featherbeds covered with Amish-made quilts. Two rooms boast whirlpool tubs and one also has a massage shower and private porch. Terre Hill has some of the best views in Lancaster County. The terrain is hilly and many bike touring companies go right past the front of our inn, which also is true for horse-drawn buggies of the local Amish and Mennonite farmers. Adamstown (called the "Antiques Capitol of the USA"), is just four miles away and has thousands of dealers and their wares every weekend. There are local farm markets, covered bridges, one-room schoolhouses, produce stands and small craft and antique stores. Our town has a Memorial Day Service, annual antique car show weekend, town-wide yard sale weekend, and Terre Hill Days. Surrounding towns also have harvest festivals in the fall. The city of Lancaster is a short drive away and offers many museums and historic walking tours. This area is also known for micro-breweries and we can steer guests to some of the best. Learn about the unique lifestyle of the Amish and Old Order Mennonites. Of course, there is always outlet shopping in Reading or Lancaster.

These recipes you will find in the cookbook and used by permission of Jan Garrabrandt. Scalloped Sweet Potato Casserole, Double Chocolate Brownies, Strawberry Cream Crepes, Cranberry Apple Bread. Taken from the book: Favorite Recipes from the Bed & Breakfasts of Lancaster County, PA

The Swag Country Inn in Waynesville

The Swag Country Inn in Waynesville:

Andrew Harper describes the inn as: "A peaceful, relaxing high-country sanctuary secluded on a breathtaking 5,000 foot ridge overlooking the Smoky Mountains." Nestled atop a 5,000 foot mountain, The Swag Country Inn boasts a mile frontage on the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Over the years, many of our guests have created touching writings, music, and art while staying at The Swag. We often offer writing and craft making workshops as part of our complementary series of special events. Past craft and art workshop leaders include: artist George Shackleford, rustic furniture craftsman Daniel Mack, and quilter Laurel Horton. The Swag also hosts workshops, readings, and informal after dinner talks given by: novelist Madeline L'Engle, Jack Gibbons (Science Advisor to President Clinton), and regional author Wilma Dykeman. The award-winning Swag Country Inn is a paradise for nature lovers who seek the finest amenities in a romantic and natural setting. We're a high country retreat nestled on 250 acres with a private entrance into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Our sixteen exquisite guest rooms boast beautiful handcrafted interiors with features such as balconies, fireplaces, steam showers and feathered beds. We also offer tantalizing breakfasts, gourmet picnic lunches, and four-course dinners prepared by our expert chefs. The Swag is the perfect place for a honeymoon, romantic getaway, or just to enjoy the quiet majesty of the Smoky Mountains! The beautiful ridge shown in the photo above has always been called "the swag" by the folks who live here. The phrase refers to a dip on the ridge. Think of swag draperies, swag lamps, or a sway-back horse, and you'll see in your mind's eye the gentle curve of our landscape.

Cookies in the Afternoon in Red Wing

The Candlelight Inn in Red Wing, MN, was built in 1877, by Horace Rich, the Manager of the Red Wing Stoneware Company, as his private residence. As you enter, you'll notice the exquisite original stained glass windows and exquisite woodwork in the front hall and staircase — skillfully crafted by European immigrants from local Butternut trees. Original Quesal light fixtures, gleaming hardwood floors, and antique period furnishings create a feeling of warmth and harmony throughout the home. Over the years subsequent owners have lovingly maintained the home. Then, in 1989, The Candlelight Bed and Breakfast Inn was established. Current owners Lynette and Zig Gudrais continue the tradition of preserving this lovely Victorian residence much as it was more than 100 years ago. The authentic Italianate-style home reflects the gentility and charm of the Victorian era but has been updated with modern conveniences. Lovely Victorian furnishings and a feather-painted faux marble fireplace, an original of the times, make the Parlor room a joy to behold. Transport yourself back to the 19th century and imagine entertaining callers in this fine room. The Library features exquisitely crafted cherry cabinetry, an original fireplace and antique leather furniture. Select from its collection of books and current periodicals and enjoy the quiet warmth and comfort of this special room. Return to the elegance of the past with breakfast in the formal dining room. An original chandelier, fine table linens, silver, china and crystal make breakfast a special occasion. Enjoy the lovely piano music played by your host as you savor your gourmet meal. You'll love sitting on the front porch watching the world go by. It's the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee or a glass of lemonade and homemade cookies in the late afternoon.
The recipes used in the cookbook are Minnesota Wild Rice Quiche, Candlelight Inn Potato Breakfast, White Chocolate Scones, and Caramelized Pineapple all used by permission of Lynette and Zig Gudrais.

Log House & Homestead on Spirit Lake

The Inn began on a whim by the parents of the present owners. They opened the doors of the Log House in June of 1990, having recently retired from the foreign service in Africa. Within a few years, guest demand justified expansion to the Homestead; and what had been a seasonal enterprise, quickly grew to a year-round operation. In 1998 they put themselves "out to pasture" and turned the reins over to their two daughters. Suzanne Tweten lives and thrives on the property with her two opinionated cats and is the primary owner. Her sister, Patrice Allen, works on-site 5 months of the year and manages the books from St. Louis with her understanding husband Mark the remainder of the year.

Two very different structures compose this little hostelry located in picturesque Otter Tail County in the heart of Minnesota’s lakes region. The county's rolling hills and curving roads encase over 1,000 lakes (more than any other county in the US). It is a verdant land in summer, a riot of color in autumn and pristine white in winter--a lovely playground for any season. Watching the lake ice "go out" in spring can be spectacular.

THE HOMESTEAD, original to the property, was built in 1902 by Swedish immigrants Gust Fredholm and wife Kristina. TODAY, its lakeside private entrance, all-season wicker-filled porch, central air conditioning, and three lovely bedrooms offer quests luxury and comfort.

THE LOG HOUSE circa 1889, across the meadow, was built by the innkeeper's great-great-grandfather Peter Jensen and his wife Anna. It was moved intact 80 miles from northern Minnesota and now rests on a knoll overlooking Spirit Lake.

The recipes from this inn include: Sour Cream Souffle', Spirited Baked Apple, Spoon Bread in a Mug, and Bette Noir...used by permission of Suzanne Tweten.

At the IAAP Conference!

And here I am in April at the Mobile Marriott Hotel for the IAAP Conference. Sold Organo Gold iced Latte Frappuccinos, gift packs and several of the B&B Cookbooks. IAAP stands for International Association of Administrative Professionals. (It was mostly women!)

Alabama Power Safety Renewal Expo

I was invited to attend the Alabama Power Safety Renewal Expo in May to give out samplings of my healthy Organo Gold coffee. I also sold several of the B&B cookbook to some employees! (See them on the far right?)

Didn't Finish!

Well, I didn't make it before Christmas...finishing up the last of the inns to blog about and now it's July...unbelievable! I'll get going again!
